In ancient times, Hoi An, once known as “Faifo,” served as a bustling trading port where merchants from various parts of Asia, including China, Japan, and Europe, exchanged goods like silk, ceramics, and spices. During the 17th and 18th centuries, it reached its peak as a major trading center under the rule of the Nguyen Lords.
Over time, Hoi An’s prominence declined due to factors such as changes in trade routes and river siltation, which made it less accessible to large ships. However, this decline inadvertently helped preserve its historic charm and architecture, leading to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

In Hoi An, you’ll find a stark contrast between touristy attractions and authentic, off-the-radar experiences. Many tourists tend to gravitate towards the same popular activities, which, while enjoyable, may lack a sense of authenticity.
However, for those willing to venture off the beaten path, there are hidden spots and lesser-known experiences waiting to be discovered.
In this list, we’ll include them all while providing our honest opinions about each activity and whether they’re worth your time or not.
1) Explore the Ancient Town
The Ancient Town of Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved architecture and rich cultural heritage. Nestled along the Thu Bon River in central Vietnam, this historic town once served as a bustling trading port from the 15th to the 19th centuries.
Its streets are lined with charming yellow-hued buildings, adorned with intricate wooden carvings and colorful lanterns, reflecting its eclectic mix of architectural influences from Chinese, Japanese, and European traders.
When in Hoi An, one of the best things to do is to explore its narrow alleyways filled with artisan workshops, traditional teahouses, and ancient temples, offering a glimpse into Hoi An’s vibrant past. The iconic Japanese Covered Bridge, built in the 16th century, serves as a symbol of the town’s multicultural history and architectural splendor.
NOTE: As of 2024, the Japanese Covered Bridge is currently undergoing maintenance.
2) Go on a Coconut Boat Tour
One of the most sought-after activities in Hoi An is taking a memorable coconut boat ride along the Thu Bon River. These coconut boats have gained popularity, largely due to social media, but the traditional tour experience may be less authentic than expected.
We had envisioned a tranquil stroll around Hoi An’s intricate waterways, but the reality was quite different. Visitors are required to wear life vests, and the water is crowded with numerous boats simultaneously navigating the river.
During our journey, we encountered a karaoke boat blasting loud music, which, while entertaining, detracted from the authenticity of the experience. A coconut boat tour typically costs about 100,000 VND ($4 USD) per person, and the tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.
3) Take a Cooking Class in Hoi An
Cooking classes in Hoi An offer hands-on experiences where participants learn to prepare traditional Vietnamese dishes. These classes typically begin with a visit to a local market to select fresh ingredients, followed by guided instruction on cooking techniques in a kitchen setting.
Participants have the opportunity to make iconic Vietnamese dishes such as pho, bánh xèo (sizzling pancakes) and fresh spring rolls. Classes cater to all skill levels and provide recipe cards for recreating dishes at home.

4) Visit My Son Sanctuary near Hoi An
My Son Sanctuary is an archaeological site located in central Vietnam, near the town of Hoi An. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most important Hindu temple complexes in Southeast Asia. The sanctuary was built by the Champa civilization between the 4th and 14th centuries AD and served as a religious and cultural center.
The site consists of a series of Hindu temples dedicated to various deities, with intricate carvings and architectural features reflecting the artistic and architectural prowess of the Champa civilization. Despite being partially destroyed by centuries of war and natural disasters, many structures at My Son Sanctuary still stand today, providing valuable insights into the history and culture of the Champa people.
The site is located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of Hoi An Old Town, and it’s open daily from 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM, with tickets priced at 150,000 VND ($7 USD) per person.
5) Cycle Through the Countryside of Hoi An
Cycling through the countryside surrounding the city is one of the best things to do in Hoi An. Renting a bicycle allows visitors to venture off the beaten path and discover hidden gems that are not easily accessible by other means of transportation.
As you pedal along the winding paths, you’ll encounter countless lush rice paddies, farms, and picturesque rural villages. The gentle pace of cycling allows for plenty of opportunities to interact with local residents, observe their daily activities, and learn about their customs and traditions.
The countryside surrounding Hoi An is mostly flat, creating an ideal environment for cycling. Many cycling routes pass through quaint villages where you can stop to sample fresh fruit from roadside stalls, savor traditional Vietnamese dishes at local eateries, or simply enjoy the tranquility of the countryside.
Renting a bicycle in Hoi An is incredibly affordable, usually priced at around 20,000 VND ($1 USD) per day, and at times, it’s even complimentary with your accommodation. A motorbike should cost around 100.000 and 120.000 VND ($4-5 USD).
6) Stop at Lò Gạch Cũ Cầu Tre
One of the most beautiful places you can reach by bicycle or motorbike in the countryside of Hoi An is Lò Gạch Cũ Cầu Tre.
Lò Gạch Cũ Cầu Tre is an ancient brick kiln nestled amidst picturesque rice fields. While here, indulge in a cup of coffee and savor delicious rice-based treats at the nearby Nông trại Lò Gạch Cũ café.

7) Thanh Ha Pottery Village
Explore Thanh Ha Pottery Village to experience traditional pottery-making techniques and admire handmade ceramic wares.
In Thanh Ha, tourism plays a vital role in supporting the village’s economy, as vendors enthusiastically showcase their pottery. However, when we visited it was very quiet, and even though the village had this touristy feel with many souvenir shops, there were no tourists in sight.
While the village may exude a touristy vibe, authentic interactions with locals are still possible. You can even immerse yourself in the craft by participating in pottery-making classes, allowing for a hands-on and insightful experience.
8) Phuoc Hai Fishing Village in Hoi An
Phuoc Hai Fishing Village in Hoi An is a traditional community nestled along the Thu Bon River, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of local fishermen and their families. Here, visitors can witness age-old fishing practices and observe the bustling activity of the village as fishermen return from their daily catch.
Phuoc Hai Fishing Village isn’t a touristy place by any means. We haven’t seen a single tourist here, and nobody recommended this place to us.
During our visit however, we were fortunate to receive a heartfelt invitation from a local resident to join him on a sunset boat ride around the bay. It was an unforgettable and magical experience, highlighting the genuine hospitality of the people in Hoi An.
9) Relax on An Bang Beach in Hoi An
An Bang Beach is a stunning stretch of coastline located just a short drive from Hoi An’s city center. Known for its soft golden sands and clear waters, An Bang Beach offers visitors a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
The beach boasts a laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for sunbathing, swimming, or simply relaxing with a book under the shade of a palm tree.
In alternative, you may want to check out Da Nang Beach – further north. This is another popular coastal destination located near Hoi An, offering a different atmosphere compared to An Bang Beach.
Unlike the more laid-back vibe of An Bang Beach, Da Nang Beach has a livelier atmosphere, with vibrant beachfront promenades, bustling markets, and a wide range of water sports facilities.
10) Sample Hoi An’s Street Food
When it comes to sampling street food in Hoi An, you’ll find an array of delicious dishes that reflect the city’s culinary heritage. These range from classics like Banh Mi to unique dishes like Com Ga, Cao Lau and Mi Quang.
In addition to these classic Hoi An specialties, the city’s night markets offer a tantalizing array of exotic treats for the adventurous eater. At these bustling night market, you can feast on local delicacies such as barbecue frogs, succulent lobsters grilled to perfection, tender pigeon roasted with fragrant spices, and much more.
TIP: You’ll find a variety of street vendors selling these exotic dishes. Look for street vendors who cook the meat fresh rather than those who serve precooked dishes to experience the best flavors.

Hoi An Lanterns are iconic symbols of the city’s enchanting atmosphere, adding a magical touch to its streets and waterways. These colorful lanterns, crafted from silk or paper, are intricately designed and often adorned with traditional patterns and motifs.

Today, visitors to Hoi An can witness the artistry of lantern-making firsthand at local workshops and markets, where they can also purchase these beautiful creations as souvenirs.
One of the most enchanting experiences in Hoi An is during the monthly Full Moon Lantern Festival, or “Hoi An Lantern Festival,” when the entire city is illuminated by thousands of colorful lanterns. During this time, the streets are closed to motorized traffic, and locals and tourists alike gather to release lanterns into the Thu Bon River, making wishes for good fortune and happiness.

Chợ Hội An, or Hoi An Day Market, is a bustling marketplace situated in the heart of Hoi An’s Ancient Town. Open during the daytime, this market offers visitors a lively atmosphere filled with local vendors, colorful displays, and an array of goods for sale.
Each morning, the market comes to life as vendors set up their stalls and begin selling a variety of products, including fresh produce, seafood, meats, spices, clothing, and handicrafts. The market is a hive of activity, with locals and tourists alike browsing the stalls, bargaining for goods, and sampling the local delicacies.
In addition to shopping, Chợ Hội An is also a great place to experience the vibrant culture and traditions of Hoi An. Here you can observe the hustle and bustle of daily life in the market, interact with friendly locals, and immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, and aromas of this lively marketplace.

17) Float a Lantern on the River in Hoi An.
Releasing a floating lantern on the river in Hoi An is a magical experience, and considered by many one of the best things to do in Hoi An. Boats, priced at 150,000 VND ($6 USD) for 1-3 people and 200,000 VND ($8 USD) for 4-5 people, are available for a 20-minute duration.
You can also buy floating lanterns separately from street vendors for as little as 10,000 VND each, after some bargaining. Find these boats near the An Hoi Bridge for an enchanting evening activity in Hoi An.

Madam Khanh – The Banh Mi Queen: Another great Banh Mi spot which is surging in popularity is Madam Khanh – The Banh Mi Queen.
Phi Banh Mi: This may not be as well-known as the previous two options, but it’s a hidden gem worth exploring if you’re in the area. Despite its lesser popularity, the eatery maintains an authentic charm, with a warm and welcoming owner. Plus, it offers more budget-friendly prices compared to the others.

Com Ga
Com Ga is a delicious Vietnamese chicken rice dish featuring tender, seasoned chicken served atop fragrant rice. It’s often accompanied by fresh herbs, sliced cucumber, and chili sauce.
At Com Ga Ba Buoi, an old and authentic spot, you’ll find it served with shredded chicken, liver, and blood sausage, adding layers of flavor to the dish. Other spots we’d recommend are Long Cơm Gà Chicken Rice Restaurant and Cơm Gà Hiền.
Cao Lau
Cao Lau is a specialty noodle dish exclusive to Hoi An, comprising thick rice noodles, succulent slices of pork, crispy croutons, and fresh herbs bathed in a savory broth. Topped with crunchy pork rinds, it’s celebrated for its unique chewy texture and rich, intricate flavors.
We tried this delightful dish at Khong Gian Xhan, one of the best rated places for Cao Lau. The price was just 40,000 VND ($2 USD). Alternatively, try Cao Lầu Bà Bé at the Hoi An market for the best local experience.
Mi Quang
Originating from central Vietnam, Mi Quang is a noodle dish made with thick rice noodles, various proteins such as shrimp, pork, or chicken, and an assortment of fresh herbs and vegetables. The dish is typically served with a small amount of broth and topped with roasted peanuts, crispy rice crackers, and a squeeze of lime. It’s known for its vibrant colors and bold, aromatic flavors.

Hoi An has a tropical climate, which means it’s usually warm and humid all year round. The city experiences distinct wet and dry seasons.
The wet season typically lasts from September to January, with heavy rainfall and occasional flooding. The dry season, from February to August, is characterized by sunny weather and less rainfall. The hottest months are usually June and July, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (95°F) or higher.
Overall, the best time to visit Hoi An is during the dry season, from February to May, when the weather is pleasant and rainfall is minimal.
