How to get there?
Contrary to expectations, accessing one of the most bustling areas in Delhi proved unexpectedly challenging. We were surprised, as it’s something that never happened to us while in India.
We were in New Delhi – just a few km away from Old Delhi – and we began looking for a ride to the Chawri Bazar. When we started asking, a huge number of rickshaw drivers declined to take us to Chawri Bazar. It all happened within a matter of minutes.
Simply put, many rickshaw drivers in Delhi didn’t want to take us there because it would take them too much time. After searching for a while, we eventually found a driver who was willing to take us close to Chawri Bazar.
If you’ll happen to be in the same situation, try referring to “Ajmere Gate” or “Turkman Gate“. These are quiter places, and they are located right next to Chawri Bazar. Alternatively, go visit the Red Fort and walk from there.
Is Old Delhi safe?
Before visiting, we’ve been warned about the potential risks of walking through the narrow and busy streets of Old Delhi as foreigners, especially with our phones or cameras out.
When we first reached, the mix of chaos and complete absence of tourists made us believe to that warning for a few minutes. It’s a place that feels different, and it might feel intimidating if you’re not used to it.
In reality, not only did the streets of Old Delhi proved to be totally safe, but it turned out to be one of the places where the people are most genuine.
It’s rare because no one pressured us to buy anything, no one trailed us, and no one treated us solely as a possible source of money.
We cherished the authentic joy people expressed in sharing moments with us, inviting us to explore more, learn about their jobs, and share laughter together.
If you’re worried about visiting Old Delhi, there’s really no need to be.
