Nahargarh Fort was built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, and it is a significant component of Jaipur’s formidable defense system, along with Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort.

How to get to Nahargarh Fort
Nahargarh Fort is located on the majestic Aravalli Hills, just a short distance from Jaipur. There are several convenient ways to reach this historic fort from the heart of the Pink City.
By Car or Taxi:
The most comfortable way to reach Nahargarh Fort is by hiring a car or taking a taxi from Jaipur. The fort is approximately 15 kilometers from the city center, and the journey takes around 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. Follow the signs or use GPS navigation for a smooth ride through the scenic routes leading to the fort.
Rickshaw/Tuk Tuk:
For a more local and budget-friendly option, consider taking an auto-rickshaw from Jaipur to Nahargarh Fort. Auto-rickshaws are readily available in various parts of the city and offer a unique and open-air experience during the journey. Negotiate the fare before starting your trip.
Walking (the old route):
For the adventurous souls, walking to Nahargarh Fort is a unique option. While it’s a bit of a trek, especially uphill, the scenic beauty along the way and the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the fort make it a memorable experience.
The Old Nahar Garh Road winds up all the way to Ghati Gate, situated only 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) from the famous Hawa Mahal and just 800 meters (0.5 miles) from the foot of the hill. Prepare for a steep hike, as you’ll have some serious elevation gain to conquer. Ensure you wear comfortable footwear and carry water for the trek.
The starting point of the hike is located near a place called “Nahargarh Palace Hotel”. From ther, find the old Nahargarh Road, pass a small police station and walk up.
TIP: Ask your driver to wait for you on the way back. The best choice would be to hire a driver for the whole day, allowing him to show you the best spots the city has to offer.
Nahargarh Fort Entrance Fee
There is a modest entrance fee to access the Nahargarh Fort, which varies based on nationality and student status. Understanding the fee structure ensures a seamless entry into this architectural gem.
Indian Visitors:
- Adults: 50 INR per person (approximately $0.68 USD)
- Students: Indian students can avail of a discounted rate, paying only Rs. 5 per person (approximately $0.07 USD). A valid student ID must be presented at the ticket counter to benefit from this concession.
Foreign Tourists:
- Adults: 200 INR per person (approximately $2.72 USD)
- Students: Foreign students also enjoy a discounted rate of Rs. 25 per person (approximately $0.34 USD) upon presentation of a valid student ID at the ticket counter.

The Sheesh Mahal
Nahargarh Fort is also home of the Sheesh Mahal, a palace adorned with mesmerizing mirror work. While the palace’s reflective artistry is renowned, some caution it may be more of a tourist trap than a historical gem.
The entrance fee is 500 INR and most reviews on google are negative. Given this feedback, we opted not to visit. However, feel free to explore if you believe the experience aligns with your preferences and expectations.
Nahargarh Biological Park and Wax Museum
Adjacent to the fort lies the Nahargarh Biological Park and Wax Museum. Immerse yourself in the captivating world of wax figures depicting historical and cultural icons.
The Wax Museum within the complex features lifelike wax figures depicting historical and cultural icons. Explore an eclectic mix of personalities, from eminent historical figures to contemporary legends, meticulously crafted to capture their essence.
Similarly to the Sheesh Mahal, the Wax Museum wasn’t something we were particularly interested in exploring and it comes with the same 500INR (700INR for foreigners) entrance fee. We opted not to go.

Just like any other major Indian landmarks, the Nahargarh Fort has become a sought-after destination for couples planning pre-wedding photoshoots. The timeless charm and regal ambiance of the fort serve as a captivating backdrop for capturing the essence of love.

Have dinner at the Fort
There are two restaurants within the fort, called Deewan-e-Khas and Padao Restaurant. Although we didn’t personally dine at the fort, these places appear to be popular choices. Feel free to explore more about them through the links if you’re interested in adding this experience to your visit.

The best spot to take the famous photo at Nahargarh is the bastion next to “Nahargarh Fort Balcony View Point“. At the bastion, you’ll discover small narrow windows that offer a panoramic view of Jaipur. Through these windows, you can admire the magnificent defensive wall descending the hillside.
What to bring at Nahargarh Fort
When visiting Nahargarh Fort, bring just the essentials. A water bottle, some comfortable shoes and a small backpack is all you need. If you’re visiting during the winter months, bring a jacket as it might get chill once the sun has set.
Additionally, bring some cash with you, as it can always come in handy for various purposes during your visit.
Best time to visit Nahargarh Fort
The best time to visit Nahargarh Fort is about 1 to 2 hours before sunset time. Keep in mind you’ll need about 30 minutes to reach it by tuk tuk, so plan accordingly.
This is the best time as the sun gets low in the sky and lights up the wall perfectly. Take advantage of these beautiful time, and make sure to stay even longer after sunset.
Overcrowding at Nahargarh Fort
Don’t expect to have the place to yourself at Nahargarh Fort. This beautiful place, in fact, is a popular spot in Jaipur amongst travellers and locals. People come at the Fort just for sunset, and the viewpoint can get very crowded.

The Nahargarh Fort from the Distance
Something that isn’t often mentioned is how beautiful is the Nahargarh Fort from the distance and from other places in Jaipur. I.e., take a look at the image below. We took this shot at sunrise from the Temple of Sun, located on the way to the Monkey Temple of Galta Ji.
The Hanuman Temple and Hathni Kund
If you have some additional time, consider doing a trek on a trail leading to the Hanuman Temple, and a waterfall. The trail begins near a palace named Charan Mandir and descends through the vegetation for about 900m before you reach the temple.
Next to the temple is Hathni Kund. This place looks best during monsoon season, but make sure to wear good hiking boots to visit it.
