What if we told you that just a few km away from the popular spot of Cetina River Spring you can find an untouched basin, filled by the same waters of Izvor Cetine? It’s Lake Peruča, a beautiful yet undiscovered place in Dalmatia!
All about Lake Peruča
Peruča Lake is an artificial lake located in the Dalmatian hinterland in Croatia. It was created in 1958 by building a dam on the Cetina River, which is the largest river in the Dalmatian region. The lake has a surface area of approximately 14.5 square kilometers and in some points it reaches a maximum depth of 60 meters.
Step back in time to the unspoiled beauty of old-world Dalmatia, where crystal-clear waters and rolling hills await your discovery. When visiting Lake Peruča, you’ll be entranced by the breathtaking scenery and welcomed by the warm and hospitable locals who call this place home.
Experience a land where time seems to stand still, where the pace of life is slower, and where the beauty of nature takes center stage.
How to get to Lake Peruča
Lake Peruča is easily accessible by car and is located about 50/60 kilometers north of the city of Split, or 65km from Sibenik. The best option, however, is to stay overnight and combine it with a visit to the Cetina River Spring, which is just 10km away.
Reaching Lake Peruća in Croatia via public transport is possible, but it may require a bit of planning and patience. Here are some options to consider:
- Bus: You can take a bus from the city of Split to the town of Sinj, which is near Lake Peruća. From Sinj, you can take a taxi or arrange for a private transfer to the lake.
- Train: You can take a train from Split to the town of Siverić, which is also near Lake Peruća. From there, you can take a taxi or arrange for a private transfer to the lake.
- Car rental: If you’re comfortable driving in Croatia, you can rent a car from Split and drive to Lake Peruća. This will give you more flexibility and control over your itinerary.
It’s worth noting that public transport options in rural areas of Croatia can be limited, so it’s always a good idea to check schedules and make reservations in advance. Also, keep in mind that the lake is quite large and there may be several access points, so be sure to research the specific location you want to visit.

Whether you’re looking to take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters, soak up the sun on the sandy shores, or explore the lush surroundings, Peruča Lake has something for everyone.
For the water enthusiasts, the lake is perfect for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and even jet-skiing, providing a thrilling experience that will leave you exhilarated and refreshed. You can rent a boat and explore the lake’s many hidden coves and beaches, or cast your fishing line and try your luck at catching the big one – whether it’s trout, carp, or pike, the lake is teeming with fish.

You can also pack a picnic and enjoy a leisurely afternoon lounging in the shade of the trees, or visit one of the local restaurants and indulge in traditional Dalmatian cuisine while overlooking the stunning vista.
What we liked the most, however, was hanging out with the locals who lived next to our accommodation. Even though they wouldn’t speak any english and we couldn’t speak any Croatian, everyone was extremely kind and welcoming, showing us the place, picking fresh figs and helping us enjoy the lake.
So whether you’re looking for an adrenaline-fueled adventure, a peaceful retreat in nature, or a cultural immersion, Peruča Lake has it all.
Rent a kayak at Lake Peruča
As far as we know, there are no places that rent kayaks at Lake Peruča. As it isn’t a touristy place even during the busiest season, there is no point for Croatians to run those types of businesses here. Luckily, some accommodations provide their guests with all the equipment to have an amazing stay at the lake.
Our hosts (we stayed at Rooms and Apartments Budiša) provided us with free kayaks, free bikes, and they even told us we could take the boat if we needed to! Wherever you plan on staying at, make sure to ask your hosts whether they provide you with kayaks or not.
The Alka tournament of Sinj
For the history buffs, Peruča Lake is located near the historic town of Sinj, which boasts a rich cultural heritage and is home to the famous Alka tournament. This annual event has been taking place for centuries, and it continues to captivate locals and visitors alike with its heart-pounding displays of horsemanship and bravery.
As the tournament begins, the sound of thundering hooves fills the air as knights on horseback charge towards a metal ring suspended in mid-air. With spears in hand, they aim to hit the target with pinpoint accuracy, earning points and accolades for their bravery and skill.
But the Alka tournament is more than just a display of athleticism – it’s a celebration of the rich history and cultural heritage of Sinj. From the colorful costumes worn by the knights to the traditional music that fills the air, every aspect of the event pays homage to the town’s proud past and enduring traditions.
WHEN IS IT? The Alka tournament takes place annually on the first Sunday in August.
